Ancient Spirit Rising

Navigate your ancestral lineage with Pegi Eyers

Ancient Spirit Rising

Is it ever appropriate to join ceremonies that don’t belong to us? Pegi Eyers argues that there’s a difference between being invited, and inviting ourselves. This is an important one for those of us in the spiritual community, particularly white practitioners and healers. And this isn’t a call-out; it’s a calling-in.

This episode is all about inviting our fellow white people to the table to take an honest look at the ways we show up in the world–– and the ways we need to do better. Our guest, Pegi Eyers, shares insights into what white supremacy looks like, how to combat it, and practices to put into your everyday life to get grounded and more connected to humanity as a whole.

Pegi Eyers is the author of Ancient Spirit Rising: Reclaiming Your Roots & Restoring Earth Community, a book that received a 2017 Next Generation Indie Book Award in the Current Events/Social Change category. Her work focuses on challenging worldview that prevent social evolution, and providing healing practices so that we may move forward toward true equality.

Insights and Inspirations

  • “Some would call it a reawakening to the spiritual wisdom of our ancient past, others might liken it to the sense of awe at the wonder and beauty of life that follows a near-death experience. However we choose to characterize it, the great turning is opening the way for an evolutionary leap to a new level of human, social, intellectual and spiritual possibility. A unique and epic opportunity is presently at hand.” — David C. Korten
  • “If we would be responsibly eclectic, if we would add meaning and substance to our religious practice and ceremonies, let us look to other cultures to gain inspiration to create our own rites and rituals. Let us educate ourselves about the spiritualities of other people, not so we that can pilfer their practices, but so that we can look deeper into our own heritages and enrich our own myths and actions sacred and meaningful to us. Let us forge a relationship with our own histories, our own myth, and culture that we might enliven it, enrich it, and carry it forward for the betterment of the future generations of our own people and communities.” — Amber Simmons

In this episode, you’ll hear about:

  • What white supremacy is and how it manifests
  • If bringing up white privilege is really divisive
  • How to get comfortable acknowledging privilege
  • What practices affirm our identities without appropriating
  • Our responsibilities as white healers

Pegi’s Tips for Grounding

  1. Earthing. Laying on the ground with the intention of connection. Breathe in deeply, and let go into the earth.

  2. Reconnecting with nature by walking through the forest. Even ten minutes does wonders!

  3. Herbalism. Learning about sacred plants, what is ours to share in–– and what isn’t.

  4. Reclaim the connection to the seasons. When we live by the wheel of the year, we’re able to connect more deeply with the primal human nature shared among us all.

  5. Know your own bio-region. Connect with your local plants, get to know how to live beside the natural world you reside in.

Words-o-Wisdom

Pegi

  • We are the ancestors of the future.
  • When you don’t take it personally, you can learn from it and integrate these new ways of knowing. It’s really not a big deal.
  • White people don’t want to give up the privilege. There are tremendous benefits to being white, and who wants to give that up? I’m sorry, that’s what’s gonna happen.
  • We’re all integral, we’re all important to the sacred circle. Just getting back there is going to take getting rid of a lot of the programming and conditioning.
  • The trick to it is humility. We really have to learn how not to think we have the answers. Just to be humble and have humility. I think that’s really key.
  • Feed the ancient knowing that will continue to rise. Treasuring what’s right around us, getting back to that really grounded nature of connecting to our ancient, eco-selves which will come forth the more that we’re close to the land. The future will look a lot better when we come from that rooted place.

  • The truths that come across in all our learnings when they sting and hurt, that’s when we know there’s some importance and substance to them.

Why am I so attached to this? Why can I not release? Why do I have to do this? I don’t.

  • By not having the earth connection, by not seeing yourself as part of Gaia, this whole experience, and seeing yourself as separate from it, allows you to then say ‘well, okay, I can take as much as I want for myself.’
